How words are counted: hyphenated terms like state-of-the-art count as one word, words split by an apostrophe like don't count as two, and standalone numbers like 2026 are not counted as words.

SEO counter

Search engines cut off titles and descriptions that run long. Check each field against the length Google actually shows.

Aim for 50–60 characters. Google truncates around 70. Put your main keyword near the front.

Aim for 140–155 characters. Google rarely shows more than 160. Write it as a reason to click, not a summary.

Separate with commas. Two or three focused terms do more than ten loose ones.

How to use the counters

The main counter is built for anything with a hard limit: a bio, an ad headline, a form field, an assignment with a word count. Paste the text, read the number, edit until it fits.

Characters with and without spaces

Most platforms count spaces. A few — some databases and older form validators — do not. Both numbers are shown so you never have to guess which one applies.

Words, hyphens, apostrophes and numbers

A word is a run of characters containing at least one letter. Hyphens keep a term together, so well-known is one word. Apostrophes split it, so l'homme is two. A year or a price on its own is measured in characters but not counted as a word.

Title tags

The title is the clickable line in search results and it carries real ranking weight. Keep it relevant to what is actually on the page, lead with the term you want to rank for, and stay under about 60 characters so it survives intact.

Meta descriptions

The description does not rank the page, but it decides whether anyone clicks it. Around 150 characters is the safe zone. Include the keyword — Google bolds matching terms, which draws the eye.
